The Journey to Become Better Teachers
Hello students,
I want to let you know that it was a pleasure to spend this semester with you all.

As we discussed with our last topic, Pedagogy of the Oppressed by Paulo Freire, I tried, to the best of my ability, to pose problems with you all and then together work with you to solve them (i.e. what did Solzhenitsyn mean in his Nobel lecture when he said, "One word of truth shall outweigh the whole world?") I hope that together we made progress in solving some of these problems. I know that I take a large amount of satisfaction in my belief that we have made progress because I have learned much from you this semester. I hope that you share in this belief!

Kohlberg’s stages of moral development
Kohlberg identified three levels of moral reasoning: pre-conventional, conventional, and post-conventional. Each level is associated with increasingly complex stages of moral development.Level 1: Preconventional
Throughout the preconventional level, a child’s sense of morality is externally controlled. Children accept and believe the rules of authority figures, such as parents and teachers. A child with pre-conventional morality has not yet adopted or internalized society’s conventions regarding what is right or wrong, but instead focuses largely on external consequences that certain actions may bring.Stage 1: Obedience-and-Punishment Orientation
Stage 1 focuses on the child’s desire to obey rules and avoid being punished. For example, an action is perceived as morally wrong because the perpetrator is punished; the worse the punishment for the act is, the more “bad” the act is perceived to be.Stage 2: Instrumental Orientation
Stage 2 expresses the “what’s in it for me?” position, in which right behavior is defined by whatever the individual believes to be in their best interest. Stage two reasoning shows a limited interest in the needs of others, only to the point where it might further the individual’s own interests. As a result, concern for others is not based on loyalty or intrinsic respect, but rather a “you scratch my back, and I’ll scratch yours” mentality. An example would be when a child is asked by his parents to do a chore. The child asks “what’s in it for me?” and the parents offer the child an incentive by giving him an allowance.Level 2: Conventional
Throughout the conventional level, a child’s sense of morality is tied to personal and societal relationships. Children continue to accept the rules of authority figures, but this is now due to their belief that this is necessary to ensure positive relationships and societal order. Adherence to rules and conventions is somewhat rigid during these stages, and a rule’s appropriateness or fairness is seldom questioned.Stage 3: Good Boy, Nice Girl Orientation
In stage 3, children want the approval of others and act in ways to avoid disapproval. Emphasis is placed on good behavior and people being “nice” to others.Stage 4: Law-and-Order Orientation
In stage 4, the child blindly accepts rules and convention because of their importance in maintaining a functioning society. Rules are seen as being the same for everyone, and obeying rules by doing what one is “supposed” to do is seen as valuable and important. Moral reasoning in stage four is beyond the need for individual approval exhibited in stage three. If one person violates a law, perhaps everyone would—thus there is an obligation and a duty to uphold laws and rules. Most active members of society remain at stage four, where morality is still predominantly dictated by an outside force.Level 3: Postconventional
Throughout the postconventional level, a person’s sense of morality is defined in terms of more abstract principles and values. People now believe that some laws are unjust and should be changed or eliminated. This level is marked by a growing realization that individuals are separate entities from society and that individuals may disobey rules inconsistent with their own principles. Post-conventional moralists live by their own ethical principles—principles that typically include such basic human rights as life, liberty, and justice—and view rules as useful but changeable mechanisms, rather than absolute dictates that must be obeyed without question. Because post-conventional individuals elevate their own moral evaluation of a situation over social conventions, their behavior, especially at stage six, can sometimes be confused with that of those at the pre-conventional level. Some theorists have speculated that many people may never reach this level of abstract moral reasoning.Stage 5: Social-Contract Orientation
In stage 5, the world is viewed as holding different opinions, rights, and values. Such perspectives should be mutually respected as unique to each person or community. Laws are regarded as social contracts rather than rigid edicts. Those that do not promote the general welfare should be changed when necessary to meet the greatest good for the greatest number of people. This is achieved through majority decision and inevitable compromise. Democratic government is theoretically based on stage five reasoning.Stage 6: Universal-Ethical-Principal Orientation
In stage 6, moral reasoning is based on abstract reasoning using universal ethical principles. Generally, the chosen principles are abstract rather than concrete and focus on ideas such as equality, dignity, or respect. Laws are valid only insofar as they are grounded in justice, and a commitment to justice carries with it an obligation to disobey unjust laws. People choose the ethical principles they want to follow, and if they violate those principles, they feel guilty. In this way, the individual acts because it is morally right to do so (and not because he or she wants to avoid punishment), it is in their best interest, it is expected, it is legal, or it is previously agreed upon. Although Kohlberg insisted that stage six exists, he found it difficult to identify individuals who consistently operated at that level.Wednesday, May 1, 2019

author’s develops his thoughts regarding the “banking concept of education.” I
have included those excerpts that I think are most relevant to our discussion
and that correlate to the assignment questions. However, in an effort not

Excerpted Text from Chapter Two of Pedagogy of the Oppressed by Paulo
Freire
A careful analysis of the teacher-student relationship at any level,
inside or outside the school, reveals its fundamentally narrative character.
This relationship involves a narrating Subject (the teacher) and patient,
listening objects (the students). The contents, whether values or empirical
dimensions of reality, tend in the process of being narrated to become lifeless
and petrified. Education is suffering from narration sickness…
…Narration (with the teacher as narrator) leads the students to
memorize mechanically the narrated content. Worse still, it turns them into
‘containers’, into receptacles to be filled by the teacher. The more completely
he fills the receptacles, the better a teacher he is. The more meekly the
receptacles permit them-selves to be filled, the better students they are.
Education thus becomes an act of depositing, in which the students are
the depositories and the teacher is the “depositor.” Instead of communicating,
the teacher issues communiques and ‘makes deposits’ which the students
patiently receive, memorize, and repeat. This is the ‘banking’ concept of
education, in which the scope of action allowed to the students extends only as
far as receiving, filing, and storing the deposits. They do, it is true, have
the opportunity to become collectors or cataloguers of the things they store.
But in the last analysis, it is men themselves who are filed away through the
lack of creativity, transformation, and knowledge in this (at best) misguided
system. For apart from inquiry, apart from the praxis, men cannot be truly
human. Knowledge emerges only through invention and re-invention, through the
restless, impatient, continuing, hopeful inquiry men pursue in the world, with
the world, and with each other.
In the banking concept of education, knowledge is a gift bestowed by
those who consider themselves knowledgeable upon those whom they consider to
know nothing. Projecting an absolute ignorance onto others, a characteristic of
the ideology of oppression, negates education and knowledge as processes of
inquiry. The teacher presents himself to his students as their necessary
opposite; by considering their ignorance absolute, he justifies his own
existence. The students, alienated like the slave in the Hegelian dialectic,
accept their ignorance as justifying the teacher’s existence - but, unlike the
slave, they never discover that they educate the teacher…
… It is not surprising that the banking concept of education regards
men as adaptable, manageable beings. The more students work at storing the
deposits entrusted to them, the less they develop the critical consciousness
which would result from their intervention in the world as transformers of that
world. The more completely they accept the passive role imposed on them, the
more they tend simply to adapt to the world as it is and to the fragmented view
of reality deposited in them.
The capacity of banking education to minimize or annul the students’
creative power and to stimulate their credulity serves the interests of the
oppressors, who care neither to have the world revealed nor to see it
transformed. The oppressors use their ‘humanitarianism’ to preserve a
profitable situation. Thus they react almost instinctively against any
experiment in education which stimulates the critical faculties and is not
content with a partial view of reality but is always seeking out the ties which
link one point to another and one problem to another….
…. The truth is, however, that the oppressed are not marginals, are not
men living ‘outside’ society. They have always been inside - inside the
structure which made them “beings for others’. The solution is not to
‘integrate’ them into the structure of oppression, but to transform that
structure so that they can become ‘beings for themselves’. Such transformation,
of course, would undermine the oppressors’ purposes; hence their utilization of
the banking concept of education to avoid the threat of student
conscientization.
The banking approach to adult education, for example, will never
propose to students that they consider reality critically. It will deal instead
with such vital questions as whether Roger gave green grass to the goat, and
insist upon the importance of learning that, on the contrary, Roger gave green
grass to the rabbit. The ‘humanism’ of the banking approach masks the effort to
turn men into automatons - the very negation of their ontological vocation to
be more fully human.
Those who use the banking approach, knowingly or unknowingly (for
there are innumerable well-intention-ed bank-clerk teachers who do not realize
that they are serving only to dehumanize), fail to perceive that the deposits
themselves contain contradictions about reality. But, sooner or later, these
contradictions may lead formerly passive students to turn against their
domestication and the attempt to domesticate reality. They may discover through
existential experience that their present way of life is irreconcilable with
their vocation to become fully human. They may perceive through their relations
with reality that reality is really a process, undergoing constant
trans-formation. If men are searchers and their ontological vocation is
humanization, sooner or later they may perceive the contra-diction in which
banking education seeks to maintain them, and then engage themselves in the
struggle for their liberation….
….. Implicit in the banking concept is the assumption of a dichotomy
between man and the world: man is merely in the world, not with the world or
with others; man is spectator, not re-creator. In this view, man is not a
conscious being (corpo consciente); he is rather the possessor of a
consciousness; an empty ‘mind’ passively open to the reception of deposits of
reality from the world outside. For example, my desk, my books, my coffee cup,
all the objects before me - as bits of the world which surrounds me - would be
‘inside’ me, exactly as I am inside my study right now. This view makes no
distinction between being accessible to consciousness and entering consciousness.
The distinction, however, is essential: the objects which surround me are
simply accessible to my consciousness, not located within it. I am aware of
them, but they are not inside me….
…. The truly committed must reject the banking concept in its entirety,
adopting instead a concept of men as conscious beings, and consciousness as
consciousness directed towards the world. They must abandon the educational
goal of deposit- making and replace it with the posing of the problems of men
in their relations with the world. ‘Problem-posing’ education, responding to
the essence of consciousness - intentional - rejects communique and embodies
communication. It epitomizes the special characteristic of consciousness: being
conscious of, not only as intent on objects but as turned in upon itself in a
Jasperian ‘split’ - consciousness as consciousness of consciousness.
Liberating education consists in acts of cognition, not transferals of
information. It is a learning situation in which the cognizable object (far
from being the end of the cognitive act) intermediates the cognitive actors -
teacher on the one hand and students on the other. Accordingly, the practice of
problem- posing education first of all demands a resolution of the
teacher-student contradiction. Dialogical relations - indispensable to the
capacity of cognitive actors to cooperate in perceiving the same cognizable
object - are otherwise impossible.
Indeed, problem-posing education, breaking the vertical patterns
characteristic of banking education, can fulfill its function of being the
practice of freedom only if it can over-come the above contradiction. Through
dialogue, the teacher-of-the- students and the students-of-the-teacher cease to
exist and a new term emerges: teacher-student with students-teachers. The
teacher is no longer merely the-one- who-teaches, but one who is himself taught
in dialogue with the students, who in their turn while being taught also teach.
They become jointly responsible for a process in which all grow. In this
process, arguments based on ‘authority’ are no longer valid; in order to function,
authority must be on the side of freedom, not against it. Here, no one teaches
another, nor is anyone self-taught. Men teach each other, mediated by the
world, by the cognizable objects which in banking education are ‘owned’ by the
teacher.
The banking concept (with its tendency to dichotomize everything)
distinguishes two stages in the action of the educator. During the first, he cognates a cognizable object while he prepares his lessons in his study or his
laboratory; during the second, he expounds to his students on that object. The
students are not called upon to know, but to memorize the contents narrated by
the teacher. Nor do the students practise any act of cognition, since the
object towards which that act should be directed is the property of the teacher
rather than a medium evoking the critical reflection of both teacher and
students. Hence in the name of the ‘preservation of culture and knowledge’ we
have a system which achieves neither true knowledge nor true culture.
The problem-posing method does not dichotomize the activity of the
teacher- student: he is not ‘cognitive’ at one point and ‘narrative’ at
another. He is always ‘cognitive’, whether preparing a project or engaging in
dialogue with the students. He does not regard cognizable objects as his
private property, but as the object of reflection by himself and the students.
In this way, the problem-posing educator constantly re-forms his reflections in
the reflection of the students. The students - no longer docile listeners - are
now critical co-investigators in dialogue with the teacher. The teacher
presents the material to the students for their consideration, and re-examines
his earlier considerations as the students express their own. The role of the
problem-posing educator is to create, together with the students, the conditions
under which knowledge at the level of the doxa is superseded by true knowledge,
at the level of the logos…
…. In problem-posing education, men develop their power to perceive
critically the way they exist in the world with which and in which they find
themselves; they come to see the world not as a static reality, but as a
reality in process, in transformation. Although the dialectical relations of
men with the world exist independently of how these relations are perceived (or
whether or not they are perceived at all), it is also true that the form of
action men adopt is to a large extent a function of how they perceive
themselves in the world. Hence, the teacher- student and the students-teachers
reflect simultaneously on themselves and the world without dichotomizing this
reflection from action, and thus establish an authentic form of thought and
action…
….Problem-posing education affirms men as beings in the process of
becoming - as unfinished, uncompleted beings in and with a likewise unfinished
reality. Indeed, in contrast to other animals who are unfinished, but not
historical, men know them-selves to be unfinished; they are aware of their
incompleteness. In this incompleteness and this awareness He the very roots of
education as an exclusively human manifestation. The unfinished character of
men and the transformational character of reality necessitate that education be
an ongoing activity.

Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn's Nobel Lecture with Response Questions

Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature (one of the most prestigious awards any writer can receive) in 1970. Perhaps more than anyone else, Solzhenitsyn was responsible for revealing the evils of communist ideology to rest of the world. As such, he serves as a critical voice to Behaviorists who argue that mankind can be engineered at will to produce a more desirable society (and better behaved students).
Below is an excerpt from the lecture that Solzhenitsyn delivered after receiving his Nobel Prize for Literature. It comes from the final part of his speech where he pays tribute to his fellow writers across the globe and the awesome power that comes from Truth found in Literature.

...However, I am cheered by a vital awareness of WORLD LITERATURE as of a single huge heart, beating out the cares and troubles of our world, albeit presented and perceived differently in each of its corners.
Apart from age-old national literatures there existed, even in past ages, the conception of world literature as an anthology skirting the heights of the national literatures, and as the sum total of mutual literary influences. But there occurred a lapse in time: readers and writers became acquainted with writers of other tongues only after a time lapse, sometimes lasting centuries, so that mutual influences were also delayed and the anthology of national literary heights was revealed only in the eyes of descendants, not of contemporaries.
But today, between the writers of one country and the writers and readers of another, there is a reciprocity if not instantaneous then almost so. I experience this with myself. Those of my books which, alas, have not been printed in my own country have soon found a responsive, worldwide audience, despite hurried and often bad translations. Such distinguished western writers as Heinrich Böll have undertaken critical analysis of them. All these last years, when my work and freedom have not come crashing down, when contrary to the laws of gravity they have hung suspended as though on air, as though on NOTHING – on the invisible dumb tension of a sympathetic public membrane; then it was with grateful warmth, and quite unexpectedly for myself, that I learnt of the further support of the international brotherhood of writers. On my fiftieth birthday I was astonished to receive congratulations from well-known western writers. No pressure on me came to pass by unnoticed. During my dangerous weeks of exclusion from the Writers’ Union the WALL OF DEFENCE advanced by the world’s prominent writers protected me from worse persecutions; and Norwegian writers and artists hospitably prepared a roof for me, in the event of my threatened exile being put into effect. Finally even the advancement of my name for the Nobel Prize was raised not in the country where I live and write, but by Francois Mauriac and his colleagues. And later still entire national writers’ unions have expressed their support for me.
Thus I have understood and felt that world literature is no longer an abstract anthology, nor a generalization invented by literary historians; it is rather a certain common body and a common spirit, a living heartfelt unity reflecting the growing unity of mankind. State frontiers still turn crimson, heated by electric wire and bursts of machine fire; and various ministries of internal affairs still think that literature too is an “internal affair” falling under their jurisdiction; newspaper headlines still display: “No right to interfere in our internal affairs!” Whereas there are no INTERNAL AFFAIRS left on our crowded Earth! And mankind’s sole salvation lies in everyone making everything his business; in the people of the East being vitally concerned with what is thought in the West, the people of the West vitally concerned with what goes on in the East. And literature, as one of the most sensitive, responsive instruments possessed by the human creature, has been one of the first to adopt, to assimilate, to catch hold of this feeling of a growing unity of mankind. And so I turn with confidence to the world literature of today – to hundreds of friends whom I have never met in the flesh and whom I may never see.
Friends! Let us try to help if we are worth anything at all! Who from time immemorial has constituted the uniting, not the dividing, strength in your countries, lacerated by discordant parties, movements, castes and groups? There in its essence is the position of writers: expressers of their native language – the chief binding force of the nation, of the very earth its people occupy, and at best of its national spirit.
I believe that world literature has it in its power to help mankind, in these its troubled hours, to see itself as it really is, notwithstanding the indoctrinations of prejudiced people and parties. World literature has it in its power to convey condensed experience from one land to another so that we might cease to be split and dazzled, that the different scales of values might be made to agree, and one nation learn correctly and concisely the true history of another with such strength of recognition and painful awareness as it had itself experienced the same, and thus might it be spared from repeating the same cruel mistakes. And perhaps under such conditions we artists will be able to cultivate within ourselves a field of vision to embrace the WHOLE WORLD: in the centre observing like any other human being that which lies nearby, at the edges we shall begin to draw in that which is happening in the rest of the world. And we shall correlate, and we shall observe world proportions.
And who, if not writers, are to pass judgement – not only on their unsuccessful governments, (in some states this is the easiest way to earn one’s bread, the occupation of any man who is not lazy), but also on the people themselves, in their cowardly humiliation or self-satisfied weakness? Who is to pass judgement on the light-weight sprints of youth, and on the young pirates brandishing their knives?
We shall be told: what can literature possibly do against the ruthless onslaught of open violence? But let us not forget that violence does not live alone and is not capable of living alone: it is necessarily interwoven with falsehood. Between them lies the most intimate, the deepest of natural bonds. Violence finds its only refuge in falsehood, falsehood its only support in violence. Any man who has once acclaimed violence as his METHOD must inexorably choose falsehood as his PRINCIPLE. At its birth violence acts openly and even with pride. But no sooner does it become strong, firmly established, than it senses the rarefaction of the air around it and it cannot continue to exist without descending into a fog of lies, clothing them in sweet talk. It does not always, not necessarily, openly throttle the throat, more often it demands from its subjects only an oath of allegiance to falsehood, only complicity in falsehood.
And the simple step of a simple courageous man is not to partake in falsehood, not to support false actions! Let THAT enter the world, let it even reign in the world – but not with my help. But writers and artists can achieve more: they can CONQUER FALSEHOOD! In the struggle with falsehood art always did win and it always does win! Openly, irrefutably for everyone! Falsehood can hold out against much in this world, but not against art.
And no sooner will falsehood be dispersed than the nakedness of violence will be revealed in all its ugliness – and violence, decrepit, will fall.
That is why, my friends, I believe that we are able to help the world in its white-hot hour. Not by making the excuse of possessing no weapons, and not by giving ourselves over to a frivolous life – but by going to war!
Proverbs about truth are well-loved in Russian. They give steady and sometimes striking expression to the not inconsiderable harsh national experience:
ONE WORD OF TRUTH SHALL OUTWEIGH THE WHOLE WORLD.
And it is here, on an imaginary fantasy, a breach of the principle of the conservation of mass and energy, that I base both my own activity and my appeal to the writers of the whole world.

...However, I am cheered by a vital awareness of WORLD LITERATURE as of a single huge heart, beating out the cares and troubles of our world, albeit presented and perceived differently in each of its corners.
Apart from age-old national literatures there existed, even in past ages, the conception of world literature as an anthology skirting the heights of the national literatures, and as the sum total of mutual literary influences. But there occurred a lapse in time: readers and writers became acquainted with writers of other tongues only after a time lapse, sometimes lasting centuries, so that mutual influences were also delayed and the anthology of national literary heights was revealed only in the eyes of descendants, not of contemporaries.
But today, between the writers of one country and the writers and readers of another, there is a reciprocity if not instantaneous then almost so. I experience this with myself. Those of my books which, alas, have not been printed in my own country have soon found a responsive, worldwide audience, despite hurried and often bad translations. Such distinguished western writers as Heinrich Böll have undertaken critical analysis of them. All these last years, when my work and freedom have not come crashing down, when contrary to the laws of gravity they have hung suspended as though on air, as though on NOTHING – on the invisible dumb tension of a sympathetic public membrane; then it was with grateful warmth, and quite unexpectedly for myself, that I learnt of the further support of the international brotherhood of writers. On my fiftieth birthday I was astonished to receive congratulations from well-known western writers. No pressure on me came to pass by unnoticed. During my dangerous weeks of exclusion from the Writers’ Union the WALL OF DEFENCE advanced by the world’s prominent writers protected me from worse persecutions; and Norwegian writers and artists hospitably prepared a roof for me, in the event of my threatened exile being put into effect. Finally even the advancement of my name for the Nobel Prize was raised not in the country where I live and write, but by Francois Mauriac and his colleagues. And later still entire national writers’ unions have expressed their support for me.
Thus I have understood and felt that world literature is no longer an abstract anthology, nor a generalization invented by literary historians; it is rather a certain common body and a common spirit, a living heartfelt unity reflecting the growing unity of mankind. State frontiers still turn crimson, heated by electric wire and bursts of machine fire; and various ministries of internal affairs still think that literature too is an “internal affair” falling under their jurisdiction; newspaper headlines still display: “No right to interfere in our internal affairs!” Whereas there are no INTERNAL AFFAIRS left on our crowded Earth! And mankind’s sole salvation lies in everyone making everything his business; in the people of the East being vitally concerned with what is thought in the West, the people of the West vitally concerned with what goes on in the East. And literature, as one of the most sensitive, responsive instruments possessed by the human creature, has been one of the first to adopt, to assimilate, to catch hold of this feeling of a growing unity of mankind. And so I turn with confidence to the world literature of today – to hundreds of friends whom I have never met in the flesh and whom I may never see.
Friends! Let us try to help if we are worth anything at all! Who from time immemorial has constituted the uniting, not the dividing, strength in your countries, lacerated by discordant parties, movements, castes and groups? There in its essence is the position of writers: expressers of their native language – the chief binding force of the nation, of the very earth its people occupy, and at best of its national spirit.
I believe that world literature has it in its power to help mankind, in these its troubled hours, to see itself as it really is, notwithstanding the indoctrinations of prejudiced people and parties. World literature has it in its power to convey condensed experience from one land to another so that we might cease to be split and dazzled, that the different scales of values might be made to agree, and one nation learn correctly and concisely the true history of another with such strength of recognition and painful awareness as it had itself experienced the same, and thus might it be spared from repeating the same cruel mistakes. And perhaps under such conditions we artists will be able to cultivate within ourselves a field of vision to embrace the WHOLE WORLD: in the centre observing like any other human being that which lies nearby, at the edges we shall begin to draw in that which is happening in the rest of the world. And we shall correlate, and we shall observe world proportions.
And who, if not writers, are to pass judgement – not only on their unsuccessful governments, (in some states this is the easiest way to earn one’s bread, the occupation of any man who is not lazy), but also on the people themselves, in their cowardly humiliation or self-satisfied weakness? Who is to pass judgement on the light-weight sprints of youth, and on the young pirates brandishing their knives?
We shall be told: what can literature possibly do against the ruthless onslaught of open violence? But let us not forget that violence does not live alone and is not capable of living alone: it is necessarily interwoven with falsehood. Between them lies the most intimate, the deepest of natural bonds. Violence finds its only refuge in falsehood, falsehood its only support in violence. Any man who has once acclaimed violence as his METHOD must inexorably choose falsehood as his PRINCIPLE. At its birth violence acts openly and even with pride. But no sooner does it become strong, firmly established, than it senses the rarefaction of the air around it and it cannot continue to exist without descending into a fog of lies, clothing them in sweet talk. It does not always, not necessarily, openly throttle the throat, more often it demands from its subjects only an oath of allegiance to falsehood, only complicity in falsehood.
And the simple step of a simple courageous man is not to partake in falsehood, not to support false actions! Let THAT enter the world, let it even reign in the world – but not with my help. But writers and artists can achieve more: they can CONQUER FALSEHOOD! In the struggle with falsehood art always did win and it always does win! Openly, irrefutably for everyone! Falsehood can hold out against much in this world, but not against art.
And no sooner will falsehood be dispersed than the nakedness of violence will be revealed in all its ugliness – and violence, decrepit, will fall.
That is why, my friends, I believe that we are able to help the world in its white-hot hour. Not by making the excuse of possessing no weapons, and not by giving ourselves over to a frivolous life – but by going to war!
Proverbs about truth are well-loved in Russian. They give steady and sometimes striking expression to the not inconsiderable harsh national experience:
ONE WORD OF TRUTH SHALL OUTWEIGH THE WHOLE WORLD.
And it is here, on an imaginary fantasy, a breach of the principle of the conservation of mass and energy, that I base both my own activity and my appeal to the writers of the whole world.

I apologize for not posting these questions earlier. As such, it is only required that you respond to the first two questions that are listed below. However, if you wish to respond to questions three and four, they will be treated as extra-credit. It is not mandatory that you answer questions three and four, but if you are in need of extra-credit, I strongly suggest you respond to them. Attempting the extra-credit questions can only help your grade.
1. Literally, what is a spectre? For Marx, what does he mean when he writes, "A spectre is haunting Europe?"
2. The Communist Manifesto is clearly in support of "reconstructionism." For Marx, education has been used as a way of maintaining the status quo (where reconstructionists favor constant change) because it has supported the interests of the ruling class. In other words, Marx believed that education has been a device used to indoctrinate people into accepting and supporting the attitudes and outlooks of financial interests. Where does Marx express this idea in The Communist Manifesto? Do you think that Marx's views on education are still relevant to the formulating of good methods of education today? Why or why not?

4. Marxism proposes that there has been a continuous "History" that has been put into motion by economic forces. That is to say, "History" has been moving in one direction where those in control of the means of production (bourgeoisie) brutally exploit workers (proletariat) in order to increase profits and enlarge their property.
From this point of view, Marx believed that "History" has been unfolding in one continuous developmental wave. By "uncovering" or "scientifically proving" this wave, Marx believed that the direction or course "History" could take was ultimately in the control of the masses, so long as they are able to take control of the means of production.
Being able to have complete control over the navigation of the future is consistent with a reconstructionist approach to education. Where are these views expressed in The Communist Manifesto? Why do you think that the logical conclusion to following this type of ideology has lead to the creation of some of most unjust and illiberal totalitarian regimes that have ever existed?

MANIFESTO OF THE COMMUNIST PARTY

A spectre is haunting Europe—the spectre of Communism.
All the Powers of old Europe have entered into a holy alliance to
exorcise this spectre: Pope and Czar, Metternich and Guizot,
French Radicals and German police-spies.

Where is the party in opposition that has not been decried as
Communistic by its opponents in power? Where is the Opposition
that has not hurled back the branding reproach of Communism,
against the more advanced opposition parties, as well as against
its reactionary adversaries?
Two things result from this fact.
I. Communism is already acknowledged by all European Powers
to be itself a Power.
II. It is high time that Communists should openly, in the
face of the whole world, publish their views, their aims, their
tendencies, and meet this nursery tale of the Spectre of
Communism with a Manifesto of the party itself.
To this end, Communists of various nationalities have
assembled in London, and sketched the following Manifesto, to be
published in the English, French, German, Italian, Flemish and
Danish languages.
I. BOURGEOIS AND PROLETARIANS
The history of all hitherto existing societies is the history
of class struggles.
Freeman and slave, patrician and plebeian, lord and serf,
guild-master and journeyman, in a word, oppressor and oppressed,
stood in constant opposition to one another, carried on an
uninterrupted, now hidden, now open fight, a fight that each time
ended, either in a revolutionary re-constitution of society at
large, or in the common ruin of the contending classes.
In the earlier epochs of history, we find almost everywhere a
complicated arrangement of society into various orders, a
manifold gradation of social rank. In ancient Rome we have
patricians, knights, plebeians, slaves; in the Middle Ages,
feudal lords, vassals, guild-masters, journeymen, apprentices,
serfs; in almost all of these classes, again, subordinate
gradations.
The modern bourgeois society that has sprouted from the ruins
of feudal society has not done away with class antagonisms. It
has but established new classes, new conditions of oppression,
new forms of struggle in place of the old ones. Our epoch, the
epoch of the bourgeoisie, possesses, however, this distinctive
feature: it has simplified the class antagonisms. Society as a
whole is more and more splitting up into two great hostile camps,
into two great classes, directly facing each other: Bourgeoisie
and Proletariat.
From the serfs of the Middle Ages sprang the chartered burghers
of the earliest towns. From these burgesses the first elements
of the bourgeoisie were developed.
The discovery of America, the rounding of the Cape, opened up
fresh ground for the rising bourgeoisie. The East-Indian and
Chinese markets, the colonisation of America, trade with
the colonies, the increase in the means of exchange and in
commodities generally, gave to commerce, to navigation, to
industry, an impulse never before known, and thereby, to the
revolutionary element in the tottering feudal society, a rapid
development.
The feudal system of industry, under which industrial production
was monopolised by closed guilds, now no longer sufficed for the
growing wants of the new markets. The manufacturing system took
its place. The guild-masters were pushed on one side by the
manufacturing middle class; division of labour between the
different corporate guilds vanished in the face of division of
labour in each single workshop.
Meantime the markets kept ever growing, the demand ever rising.
Even manufacture no longer sufficed. Thereupon, steam and
machinery revolutionised industrial production. The place of
manufacture was taken by the giant, Modern Industry, the place of
the industrial middle class, by industrial millionaires, the
leaders of whole industrial armies, the modern bourgeois.
Modern industry has established the world-market, for which the
discovery of America paved the way. This market has given an
immense development to commerce, to navigation, to communication
by land. This development has, in its time, reacted on the
extension of industry; and in proportion as industry, commerce,
navigation, railways extended, in the same proportion the
bourgeoisie developed, increased its capital, and pushed into the
background every class handed down from the Middle Ages.
We see, therefore, how the modern bourgeoisie is itself the
product of a long course of development, of a series of
revolutions in the modes of production and of exchange.
Each step in the development of the bourgeoisie was accompanied
by a corresponding political advance of that class. An
oppressed class under the sway of the feudal nobility, an
armed and self-governing association in the mediaeval commune;
here independent urban republic (as in Italy and Germany),
there taxable "third estate" of the monarchy (as in France),
afterwards, in the period of manufacture proper, serving either
the semi-feudal or the absolute monarchy as a counterpoise
against the nobility, and, in fact, corner-stone of the great
monarchies in general, the bourgeoisie has at last, since the
establishment of Modern Industry and of the world-market,
conquered for itself, in the modern representative State,
exclusive political sway. The executive of the modern State is
but a committee for managing the common affairs of the whole
bourgeoisie.
The bourgeoisie, historically, has played a most revolutionary
part.
The bourgeoisie, wherever it has got the upper hand, has put an
end to all feudal, patriarchal, idyllic relations. It has
pitilessly torn asunder the motley feudal ties that bound man to
his "natural superiors," and has left remaining no other nexus
between man and man than naked self-interest, than callous "cash
payment." It has drowned the most heavenly ecstasies of
religious fervour, of chivalrous enthusiasm, of philistine
sentimentalism, in the icy water of egotistical calculation. It
has resolved personal worth into exchange value, and in place of
the numberless and indefeasible chartered freedoms, has set up that
single, unconscionable freedom—Free Trade. In one word, for
exploitation, veiled by religious and political illusions, naked,
shameless, direct, brutal exploitation.
The bourgeoisie has stripped of its halo every occupation
hitherto honoured and looked up to with reverent awe. It has
converted the physician, the lawyer, the priest, the poet, the
man of science, into its paid wage labourers.
III. SOCIALIST AND COMMUNIST LITERATURE
1. REACTIONARY SOCIALISM
A. Feudal Socialism
Owing to their historical position, it became the vocation of the
aristocracies of France and England to write pamphlets against
modern bourgeois society. In the French revolution of July 1830,
and in the English reform agitation, these aristocracies again
succumbed to the hateful upstart. Thenceforth, a serious political
contest was altogether out of the question. A literary battle
alone remained possible. But even in the domain of literature
the old cries of the restoration period had become impossible.
In order to arouse sympathy, the aristocracy were obliged to
lose sight, apparently, of their own interests, and to formulate
their indictment against the bourgeoisie in the interest of the
exploited working class alone. Thus the aristocracy took their
revenge by singing lampoons on their new master, and whispering
in his ears sinister prophecies of coming catastrophe.
In this way arose Feudal Socialism: half lamentation, half
lampoon; half echo of the past, half menace of the future; at
times, by its bitter, witty and incisive criticism, striking the
bourgeoisie to the very heart's core; but always ludicrous in
its effect, through total incapacity to comprehend the march of
modern history.
The aristocracy, in order to rally the people to them, waved the
proletarian alms-bag in front for a banner. But the people, so
often as it joined them, saw on their hindquarters the old feudal
coats of arms, and deserted with loud and irreverent laughter.
One section of the French Legitimists and "Young England"
exhibited this spectacle.
In pointing out that their mode of exploitation was different to
that of the bourgeoisie, the feudalists forget that they
exploited under circumstances and conditions that were quite
different, and that are now antiquated. In showing that, under
their rule, the modern proletariat never existed, they forget
that the modern bourgeoisie is the necessary offspring of their
own form of society.
For the rest, so little do they conceal the reactionary
character of their criticism that their chief accusation against
the bourgeoisie amounts to this, that under the bourgeois regime
a class is being developed, which is destined to cut up root and
branch the old order of society.
What they upbraid the bourgeoisie with is not so much that it
creates a proletariat, as that it creates a revolutionary
proletariat.
In political practice, therefore, they join in all coercive
measures against the working class; and in ordinary life,
despite their high falutin phrases, they stoop to pick up the
golden apples dropped from the tree of industry, and to barter
truth, love, and honour for traffic in wool, beetroot-sugar, and
potato spirits.
As the parson has ever gone hand in hand with the landlord,
so has Clerical Socialism with Feudal Socialism.
Nothing is easier than to give Christian asceticism a Socialist
tinge. Has not Christianity declaimed against private property,
against marriage, against the State? Has it not preached in the
place of these, charity and poverty, celibacy and mortification
of the flesh, monastic life and Mother Church? Christian
Socialism is but the holy, water with which the priest consecrates
the heart-burnings of the aristocrat.
The bourgeoisie has torn away from the family its sentimental
veil, and has reduced the family relation to a mere money
relation.
